WOMEN'S RIGHT TO VOTE

  • Women did not originally share all the same rights as men
  • One of those rights was including the right to vote
  • 19th Amendment guarantees American women the vote

THE NINETEENTH AMENDMENT

  • Women argued 14th amendment gave suffrage
  • Seneca Falls, NY 1848
  • Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton
  • Drafted and first introduced in 1878

  • Submitted to the states for ratification in 1919
  • Wyoming, 1890
  • 1912, Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party

WOMEN GOT THE VOTE

  • May, 1919- 2/3 vote in Congress
  • July, 1920- Tennessee had deciding vote
  • Majority of states opposed were southern states
  • August 26, 1920- Certification by U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby
  • November 2, 1920- 8 million women in U.S. voted for first time
