October 9, 1781, Cornwallis disregarded an order form to send part of his army to New York.
He retreated to Yorktown peninsula , Washington saw an opportunity to trap him
He could not get supplies , he could not escape by land or sea. A siege occurred
The British surrendered their weapons and marched between the victorious troops.

TREATY OF PARIS APPROVED
Paris 1782, congress sent Benjamin Franklin & John Adams to work out a treaty.
Britain was eager to end the war , Americans got most of what they wanted.
The British recognized the U.S. as an independent nation. It extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River.
April 15, 1783 congress ratified the treaty of Paris
