wHERE AND WHAT HAPPENED

• The family was on vacation in portugal
• They were staying in Praia da Luz
• MacCann's parents were having dinner
• Every 15 minutes they would check on their kids
• At 10pm, they went back to only find their twins

What happened

• so many people were going in and out of the hotel that evidence was tainted
• Madeleine's parents became suspects
• British/Portuguese National Robert Murat was the initial suspect
• Police assumed that she was kidnapped by a pedophile ring or adoption ring

From 2007 to 2013

• In 2008, the Portuguese police closed the case due to detecting no crimes
• In 2013, the public prosecutor's office in Lisbon reopened the case
• stated that new leads emerged during a case review
• In 2011, the British police launched Operation Grange
• they collected cases of sexual assaults between 2004 and 2010

7 years later

• On June 2, 2014, the British police cordoned a scrubland area by the hotel 
• They are expected to conduct a forensic examination over the next 3 weeks
• As of right now, they have found no new evidence
• They have searched 3 different sites
