DURING THE MIDDLE AGES IN...

  • England,cats particularly black cats were thought to be connected to evil and witchcraft.
  • Germany,it was believed that if a black cat were to jump over the bed of someone sick that they would die.
  • Finland,people believed that black cats carried the souls of the dead into the afterlife.

IN MAINLAND EUROPE ...

DURING THE FEAST OF ST.JOHN ALL OF THE BLACK CATS WERE GATHERED UP AND BURNED ALIVE .

18TH-19TH CENTURY

  • Pirates thought that black cats were bad luck when they walked towards them.
  • Wives of fishermen kept black cats as pets because they thought it would keep their husbands safe at sea.

ANCIENT EGYPTIANS AND CATS

  • Cats were important to the Ancient Egyptians because they hunted the rodents that would eat the crops.
  • Ancient Egyptians even had cat goddesses such as Bastet (goddess of truth and prosperity).
  • The Pharaohs' of Egypt also made a law stating that if someone were to hurt a cat then they would die.
