BLUE WHALES

SAVE THESE AMAZING MAMMALS

ADAPTATIONS OF THE BLUE WHALE

  • The blue whales have flippers that help them swim properly in the water.
  • Blue whales have blowholes for breathing.
  • Their body shape can help them swim better in water.
  • A blue whales blubber is also an adaption, it keeps them warm when they travel through cold water.
  • Blue whales have tails that are part of an important adaptation, they use them to swim faster.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BLUE WHALE

  • Blue whales have a slender shape and a flat body.
  • They also have a long body and mottled gray color pattern.

The Blue whales are found worldwide. Blue whales in the Northern Hemisphere are generally smaller than those in the Southern ocean. In the North Pacific, blue whales can grow 88 feet (27m) but in the Antartic, they can reach up 108 feet (33m) and can weight more than 330,000 pounds (150,000kg).

The population on the graphs showed that they increased from 1970 to 2010. The world finally realized that they are still endangered and that they have to protect them. Although they were only 600 Blue whales at first, people stopped killing them and making them suffer until now. They were 3,000 in 2010.

BLUE WHALES ECOSYSTEM AND HABITAT

The Blue whales are found mostly in cold and temperate waters. They are comfortable in deeper ocean waters to coastal waters. The blue whale are in the Icelandic and Celtic marine ecosystems. They also have their favorite food in deeper ocean where they can find krill and plankton. Blue whales don't travel in groups they travel individually or in parters of 2 or 3. They also live in the waters of every ocean. Mostly in the waters of the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. Blue whales like to be free in the waters instead of being in shallow waters. The blue whales habitat include the Caribbean sea.

FACTS

  • Earth's largest animal, the endangered blue whale can eat some 4 to 8 tons of krill per day.
  • Blue whales travel an average of 3 – 12 miles per hour, but can reach speeds of over 25 miles per hour when they feel threatened
  • Weight of the tongue of a Blue Whale is equal to that of a full-grown elephant; the weight is 2.7 metric tons. Heart of the Blue Whale weighs around 1300lbs
  • The largest whale ever measured was a female weighing 171,000 kgs and measuring over 90ft./27m long.
  • The Population 10,000-25,000 individuals

MAYOR HUMAN IMPACTS THAT THREATEN THE WHALES

  • Ship strikes: It can make the blue whales population decrease, and can make them lose their homes.
  • Whaling: its bad because it risks whales to extinction.
  • Toxics/habitat loss: It can give them health issues and can have body problems. Toxic Chemicals Are Causing Cancer in Whales.
  • Fishing gears: it can damage their bodies and it will make them feel scared.
  • Direct Exploitation: deep sea oil exploration and drilling can damage whale hearing and cause harmful pollution.

HOW ARE THE BLUE WHALES BEING PROTECTED?

A way that people are helping is that they make commercials and so that people notice whats happening to the Blue whales. Other people also sell T-shirts that show that they need help, and that they want people to join. Some just simply send letters to friends and spread the word. Which I think would be my action. They are also making laws about whale hunting and that it needs to stop.

SOLUTION TO KEEP THE BLUE WHALES FROM GOING EXTINCT

  • Make posters that support the blue whales
  • Send letters to friends, family and let them know about the blue whales.
  • Make T-shirts that help the blue whales
  • Create a small website that talk about how people can help the whales.

I want to make to share this Haiku Deck with my friends. I also want to post a documentary about the blue whales on my website so that they notice what is happening.
