Congenital adrenal hyperplasia

CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA REFERS TO A GROUP OF INHERITED DISORDERS OF THE ADRENAL GLAND.

CLASSIC V. NONCLASSIC

  • Classic CAH:
  • This more severe form of the disease is usually detected in infancy or early childhood
  • Nonclassic CAH:
  • This milder form usually develops in late childhood or early adulthood.

SYMPTOMS OF CLASSIC CAH

  • Female infants usually have ambiguous external genitalia & normal internal female genitalia
  • Male infants usually appear normal at birth, although may have enlarged penis
  • Signs of early puberty in boys after infancy and rapid growth
  • Low levels of salt and birth
  • *** can be fatal if not diagnosed at birth

SYMPTOMS OF NONCLASSIC CAH

  • In males and females:
  • Early development of armpit and pubic hair
  • Rapid growth during childhood
  • Early or severe acne
  • Infertility or decreased fertility

TREATMENT

  • Hormone pills
  • Surgery for females
