PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CARDIOVASCULAR SURGEON

BY EMILIE MARCUM

Job Description
A cardiovascular surgeon is a heart doctor that performs surgery on the thoracic cavity. (the ribs, vertebral column, the breast bone, heart, lungs, trachea and esophagus) These surgeons and doctors conduct tests, before surgery, on patients to determine whether they have any conditions within the heart or vessels that need treatment. In addition, to performing complicated surgeries, heart surgeons must conduct follow-up visits with patients and help them manage their overall health.

THORACIC CAVITY

Mathematics
The physical pressure-volume relationships in the heart are followed using the Starling law, which is both math and physics. Also, cardiologists talk about cardiac output (the volume pumped per unit of time) and ejection fraction (volume pumped per stroke). Cardiologists interpret EKG's, which involves ratios, graphing, a basic understanding of circuits and voltage, and measurement of electrical intervals. All doctors also have to have an understanding of statistics, so that when they read research studies done on large populations, they understand the reality behind the numbers.

Starling Law-
The strength of the heart's systolic contraction is directly proportional to its diastolic expansion with the result that under normal physiological conditions the heart pumps out of the right atrium all the blood returned to it without letting any back up in the veins.
(Simpler terms)-
The greater amount of blood volume (preload) into the ventrical of the heart during diastole (the relaxed phase) the greater the amount of blood volume ejected out of the heart during the systolic(contraction phase).
EKG-
An electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) is an electrical recording of the heart.

Outlook

According to the BLS, Cardiac Surgeons' specialized expertise will be in continued demand from 2010-2020, especially in less populated, more rural areas of the U.S. where the ratio of physicians to population is lower. Earning potential in the Cardiac Surgery field is very high, with the BLS listing the median annual salary for surgeons as $187,199 in 2012.
