1.
KNIGHTS AND CHIVALRY
Chivalry was a moral system that stated all knights should protect others who can not protect themselves.
You became a knight by being born into a rich family or a family that was well integrated at court.
The king could also gift you knighthood if you provided some exceptional service.
All knights needed to have the strength and skills to fight wars in the Middle Ages.
They not only had to be strong but they were also extremely disciplined.

TOURNAMENTS
The first tournaments were mock battles that were for military training.
Jousting was a way for knights to dispute their ranks.
These early battles were called duels of chivalry, not tournaments.
In jousting a knight won by hitting his opponent's shield or helmet.
Jousting reached its height as a medieval spectator sport in the 13th century.

BECOMING A KNIGHT
At the age 15 or 16 a boy became a squire.
He had to dress the knight in the mornings and take care of his horse.
He followed his knight to the battle field and assisted him at tournaments.
After proving himself worthy a lord would crown the squire a knight .
There would be a long ceremony and pledge to his lord.
