CAUSE

THE NORTH ARGUED WITH THE SOUTH

• Seeing that Missouri made up of slaves it worried the north
• It also made the 11 free and 12 slave states making votes uneven
• North thought a state with more slaves than citizens was unfair

HENRY CLAY

• Pro war (war hawk)
• Had his own slaves
• In his will he freed his slaves
• Helped created the Missouri Compromise

MISSOURI COMPROMISE

• This let Missouri becomes a slave state to the Union
• But Missouri had to free slaves age of 25
• Freed slaves were sent to Nigeria as "free people "
• Boundary was made 36 30' north latitude (the south boundary of Missouri)
• Maine becomes a free state evening the free and slave states

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

• It created a precedent (example) for other states for 30 years
• The disagreement between free and slave states turned into the civil war
• Limited slavery into the west
