SAHARA

  • Sahara makes up about 10% of Africa
  • Sahara is often cited as the world's largest desert.
  • The highest point in the desert is the 11,204-foot below sea level
  • Regs are plains of sand and gravel that make up 70% of the Sahara

MT KILIMANJARO

  • Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa
  • There are currently six routes up the mountain
  • The height of Kilimanjaro is usually given as 5895 m or 19,340 ft.
  • It measures up to 40 km across.

HORN OF AFRICA

  • is a peninsula in Northeast Africa
  • lies along the southern side of the Gulf of Aden.
  • It covers approximately (770,000 sq mi)
  • The lowlands of the Horn are generally arid close proximity to the equator.

CONGO BASIN

  • The basin itself stretches for more than 1,200 miles
  • The Congo basin is home to the second largest rainforest in the world.
  • High mountains lie to east.
  • The basin was originally the watershed of the Congo River populated by pygmy people

NILE RIVER

  • The Nile river flows north from the heart of Africa to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • It begins as 2 separate rivers, the Blue Nile and the White Nile.
  • Nile is the world's longest river at 4,135 miles.
  • Sources Lake Victoria, Uganda; Lake Tana, Ethiopia

GREAT RIFT VALLEY

  • Rift valleys are created by plate tectonics.
  • Many rift valleys have been found underwater
  • There are only two rift valleys on Earth within continental crust
  • The deepest continental rift valley on Earth is the Baikal Rift Valley
