GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES OF AFRICA

BY:LISA OSWALD

MOUNT KENYA

  • It is the highest mountain in Kenya and second highest in Africa.
  • It is a stratovolcano located in central Kenya, just south of the equator.
  • It was covered by an ice cap for thousands of years.
  • This has resulted in very eroded slopes and numerous valleys radiating from the center.

NIGER RIVER

  • It is the principal river of Western Africa extending about 2,600 miles.
  • It is the third longest river in Africa after the Nile and Congo.
  • It's source is the Guinea Highlands in southeastern Guinea.
  • It is relatively clear, carrying about one tenth as much sediment as the Nile.

LAKE VICTORIA

  • It is Africa's largest lake by area with an area of 26,600 square miles.
  • It is the worlds second largest freshwater lake by area after Lake Superior.
  • It receives almost 80% of its water from direct precipitation.
  • The lake was first sighted by a European in 1858.

CONGO BASIN

  • It is the sedimentary basin of the Congo River.
  • It holds roughly 8% of the world's forest-based carbon.
  • The basin begins in the highlands of the East African Rift system.
  • It ends where the river empties into the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean.

GREAT RIFT VALLEY

  • It is a continuous geographical trench about 3,700 miles in length.
  • It runs from northern Syria to central Mozambique in Southeast Africa.
  • It ranges in elevation from 1,300 ft below sea level to 6,000 ft above sea level.
  • In Eastern Africa it separates into two branches, the Eastern rift and Western rift.

MOUNT CAMEROON

  • It is an active volcano in Cameroon near the Gulf of Guniea.
  • It is one of Africa's largest volcanos rising 13,255 ft above the coast of west Cameroon.
  • In 1922 an eruption from it's southwestern flank produced lava flow that reached the Atlantic Coast.
  • It has the most frequent eruptions of any West Africa volcano.

TIBESTI MOUNTAINS

  • It's located in the central Sahara Desert mostly on the border between Chad and Libya.
  • It's highest peak lies in the south at 11,302 ft and is the highest point of Chad and the Sahara.
  • It is 240 miles in length and 220 miles in width.
  • Bikku Bitti, the highest peak in Libya is located in the north part of the range.

ZAMBEZI RIVER

  • It is the fourth largest river in Africa and largest flowing into the Indian Ocean.
  • The population of the river valley is estimated to be about 32 million people.
  • The Kariba and Cahora Bassa Dams are the two main sources of hydroelectric powere on the river.
  • It is 1,599 miles long and it's basin is 540,000 square miles which is less than half of the Nile.
