GEOLOGIC TIME PROJECT

By: Jacob Moody

PERIOD: TONIAN

  • Time range: 850 MYA to 1000 MYA.
  • Previous period: Cryogenian
  • Following period: Stenian

PERIOD CLIMATE

  • It did involve snow and ice.
  • A cold period.
  • The average temperature was about 10C(41F).

MAJOR EVENTS

  • Rodinia supercontinent persists.
  • Trace fossils of simple multi- celled eukaryotes are discovered.
  • First radiation of dinoflagellate -like arcitarchs appear.
  • Grenville Orogeny tapers off in North America.

POSITION OF CONTINENTS

The name is derived from the Greek word meaning "stretch" possibly from the rifting and stretching of continental plates, which led to the breakup of Rodinia. The stretching created a thinning of the crust in the stretched regions, leading to the formation of inland seas.

ANIMALS DURING THE PERIOD

  • Acritarchs: small animal like organisms.
  • Chlorophyta: an Acritarchs in the form of algae.
  • Egg Cases: egg cases of small metazoans contain Acritarchs.

PLANTS DURING THE PERIOD

  • Green Algae: a green-like vegetation; the first multicellular form of a plant during this period.
  • Archean: a geologic eon that eras present during this period.
  • Unicellular fungi: one celled microorganism.
