A governess is basically a female teacher hired by upper and middle class people to educated girls at home while boys went off to school.

In the Victorian society, the view of women was one of piety. These women was one who was pious, never worked, married young, and ran her household and takes care of her husband and children. The ideal woman wore no makeup or displayed pleasure in anyplace except home.
