1791-1804

The Haitian Revolution between 1791 and 1804 was a slave revolt in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, which culminated in the elimination of slavery there and the founding of the Republic of Haiti.

HISTORICAL FACTS

  • -Ten to fifteen thousand slaves in Haiti rise in rebellion. -The revolt began in April of 1791. It ended in November of 1803 with the French defeat at the Battle of VertiÉres. -Haiti Massacre 1804 decreed by Jean-Jacques Dessalines -Spain and Great Britain compete to take advantage of the chaos in Saint-Domingue.
