HINDUISM

FOUNDER

  • There is no founder or central figure of Hinduism

POLYTHEISTIC

  • Hindus believe in more than one God.

SYMBOLS

  • Lotus flower- roots in the mud, but blooms above the water.
  • Dancing Shiva
  • Aum- both a symbol & sound

ORIGIN

  • Originated in India and its a majority religion

SPREAD OF HINDUISM

  • Spread across India, at least briefly to other parts of Asia because
  • It was seen as "tolerant"

EPIC POEM

  • Shows principles, and urges people to pursue "dharma", moral law that
  • Places consequences for our actions

WORSHIP

  • Hindus worship in public or private
  • In public, they go to a temple and offer prayers, a priest may be present
  • if the priest not there they'll offer the worship by themselves
  • In private, a person may have a home shrine, with statues, symbols and
  • objects of worship

HOLIDAYS

  • Holi- festival of colors and spring
  • Mahashivaratri (Shiva Ratri)- night sacred to shiva
  • Rama Navami- birthday of Lord Rama
  • Krishna Jayanti- birthday of Lord Krishna
  • Kumbh Mela- pilgrimage every 12 years to four cities in India

  • They have ceremonies, their emphasis on mystical ides that seek out the
  • divine soul belief in seincarnation
