Move to cities:

  • People wanted to move to the cities for jobs in factories
  • Hard to make living from small farms now

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Low wages
  • Long hours
  • No safety for workers from machines
  • Punishment if expectations not met

Corporate Leaders:

  • John D Rockefeller- controlled all oil in US

LIVING AREAS 1800:

  • 20% towns/cities
  • 80% farms

ROLE OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN:

  • Many women started working domestic jobs
  • In poor family's Children had to work
  • The child's money was needed for the family's survival

NEW SOCIAL CLASSES:

  • Upper Class: Very rich industrial & business families.
  • Middle class- professionals, shop owners
  • Working Class: Factory workers and small farmers.

Trade Unions:

  • Devolpe to give workers a voice in the work place
