THE FACTS
The first working four-stroke engine was built by German engineer Nicolaus Otto in 1876.
This is why the four-stroke principle today is commonly known as the Otto cycle
A four-stroke engine is an internal combustion engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes
A similar engine was built in 1893 by Rudolph Diesel, also of Germany.
Diesel created his engine to improve efficiency compared with the Otto engine.
