WHAT IS A LAWYER?

  • "a person learned in the law; as an attorney"
  • An aid who can help with legal troubles
  • An associate to help with your finances and ensure you aren't being cheated.
  • There are many types of lawyers, ranging from criminal to corporate.
  • The salary for a lawyer varies widely, from 41,000 to almost 200,000 a year!

WHY I CHOSE THIS

  • I chose a lawyer because I have always been interested in law.
  • I didn't want to be a police officer, because I'm a little guy.
  • I prefer book smarts to physical strengths.
  • I enjoy debate

TYPES OF LAWYERS

  • Bankruptcy (deals with financial issues)
  • Family (deals with divorce, child, custody, etc.)
  • Criminal (deals with legal troubles)
  • Corporate (helps with business decisions for companies)
  • Civil Rights (deals with civil rights violations)

YOUR RIGHTS

  • If you're ever picked up by the police, STAY CALM.
  • Be polite, say yes sir/mam, no sir/mam.
  • Ask "am I being detained, or am I free to go?"
  • If you're being detained, politely tell the officer you wish to remain silent.
  • Tell them you refuse to speak until you've consulted with an attorney.
