LETTER FROM BIRMINGHAM JAIL

APRIL 16,1963 MARTIN LUTHER KING JR

King was arrested for his nonviolent protest.This letter was written on scraps of paper smuggled into the jail. The letter was composed in eight days of King being in the jail cell. Apparently the letter was written as a response to a letter that ran in a local newspaper.

-King's main points of the letter was protesting against segregation was a legitimate reason. The theme of the letter was nonviolence and the church.

Martin writes to the Clergy with patience quoting "“Let us all hope that the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away and the deep fog of misunderstanding will be lifted from our fear-drenched communities, and in some not too distant tomorrow the radiant stars of love and brotherhood will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty.”
