PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Matthew 6:7-8

Anticipatory Set: Have students call to mind themes from previous two verses: Prayer, Pride and Being Genuine. Write down on show me board.
Instructional Objective: Students will be able to i.d. themes from these verses, connect with previous verses, and pick an image that expresses the theme to them.
Introduce briefly that the next two verses are similar but Jesus tells us more about how to pray.

Matthew 6:7

  • And when you pray,
  • do not keep on babbling like pagans,
  • for they think they will be heard
  • because of their many words.
Have each student read a line round robin.

Matthew 6:8

  • Do not be like them,
  • for your Father nows what you need
  • before you ask Him.

What Themes do you see??

Take a moment for the students to i.d. the obvious theme (prayer) and then have the students pull out key words from the verses that represent big ideas.

Being heard

The pagans babble because they must make a grand display to be heard by their gods. Ask students if they feel like they need to do that to be heard by God?

Need

Prayer often involves asking for what you need for "pagans" as well as Christians.
Ask students if they often begin their prayers with asking.

Trust

One of the central themes concerning prayer seen in these verses is trust.
Pagans must make a big display to be heard and to get what they need. However, the same is not true for us.
Make sure students get this connection by asking them to explain verse 8.

Jesus tells us

that God knows what we need even before we ask
Reread verse. Highlight the difference between the pagans and their babbling and our God who gives us what we need even before we ask!
Model: Give a specific example of when I was afraid and didn't trust God but he worked things out even without me doing anything.

 a big Show

This means we don't need to make
Practice: Have students write in their journals what the big idea of these verses are. With one another and in their journals, have students connect big idea of this passage (trust) with big idea of previous (being genuine). This connection can be personal one (how trusting helps being genuine).

So now...

  • Think of an image that symbolizes trust to you
  • for examples, an image the bible gives us is a bird (Mt 6:26)
  • Write in your journal about what that image means to do
  • Grab some art supplies and make a pretty picture!
  • Hang this picture to remind you of God's care and love
Have students follow the directions on the slide. Before they leave ask them to name each theme we i.d.'ed and how they connected these verses to the previous ones.
