MEDIEVAL TOWNS

  • Soldiers protected the town,
  • While approaching the wall soldiers would ask you what your business was.
  • If you were selling goods you had to pay a toll (like a tax)
  • At sunset the gates were closed and not opened until dawn

HIGH STREETS

  • Only the High Street was paved with stone
  • Every town had a parish church
  • Rich merchants lived on the high street
  • Most of the houses were made of wood,the were usually 3 storeys high
  • Each storey leaned out over the other,which made the street dark

MARKET SQUARE

  • There were no food shops in the town
  • The families kept sheep,cows,pigs and grew crops
  • Peasants came to the town on market day once a week
  • They sold food

THIS IS WHAT THE MEDIEVAL WOMEN WORE

WOMEN WORE THIS DRESS AROUND THE TOWN

People who committed small crimes were brought into the market square and were put into a pillory while people mocked them.
Robber has their hands chopped off,liars had their tongues chopped off,people who gossiped was forced to wear a scold bridle and murders were hanged in public.

FIRES
Because the houses were built of wood there had to be a strict rule about fire.
When the church bell rang,at sunset,it marked the curfew.which ment all fires in the town had to be put out.

Leprosy
People seldom washed themselves and they all had fleas.Many suffered from skin disease.Leprosy was a common one.Sores were all over the body.Lepers weren't aloud to mix,so lived in a special place.

Black Death
Many people threw toilet waste and rubbish onto the street which lead rats.rats were the cause of Black Death.it wiped out 1/3 of the population.They believe it was a punishment for their sins.Far more townspeople died than peasants because the town was so dirty

Craftsmen
There were many different types of craftsmen living in the town like ironmongers,bakers,
carpenter and butchers.Most of the craftsmen lived in the shop

Merchants became rich from selling and trading.They sold wool iron and wood to the crafts workers and imported exotics goods such as spices and silks.most of the merchants houses were timber framed and their walls were covered with thick plaster.
