NARWHALS

WHERE THEY LIVE

  • Lives in Northern America
  • Around Greenland and the islands in northern Canada
  • They live in the north part of the Northern hemisphere
  • They have also been spotted by northern Russia

FUN FACTS

  • The tusk of the narwhal is actually a huge tooth from the upper jaw
  • There is estimated to be between 45,000-50,000 narwhals around the world
  • Narwhals have been known to be up to 13-16 feet long and up to 1.8 tons
  • Their tusk has seen to be up to 15 feet long

DIET

  • Narwhals diet consists of fish, squid, and shrimp

BEHAVIOR

  • Narwhals are normally slow moving animals unless they are being hunted by a predator
  • They move in communities of 10-100
  • They communicate by different sounds such as squeaks, thrills, and clicks
  • The males use their tusks to duel each other for fun
  • When it's cold out narwhals are out in the middle of the ocean where is warm

BEHAVIOR CONT.

  • When it's warm out they like to be near shore
  • Normally they like to be close to the surface however they can dive down to 5,000 feet

REPRODUCTION

  • Mating season is during the months of March through May
  • The female mates every 3 years and they only have one calf

THREATS & PREDATORS

  • Narwhals have several predators such as the polar bear
  • Or the Orca otherwise known as the killer whale
  • One threat that the narwhals face is habitat change due to climate change

MORE FUN FACTS

  • The story of the unicorn comes from the narwhal.
  • The tusk spirals around from the base to the tip
  • The tooth is embedded in the head up to 15 inches
