NAME, REGION & DATE, FOUNDER

  • New York Colony
  • Middle Region
  • Founded in 1626
  • Founder is Peter Minuit and The Dutch Colony

REASONS FOR LOCATION/FOUNDING

  • New York was found for trading supplies such as furs and making profits.
  • The Dutch chose the location because of The Hudson River and because it was near the coast they could trade easier by ships through ports.

JOBS; MAKING A LIVING

  • The jobs they had were farming they specialized in corn, wheat, and vegetables.
  • Merchants and Tradesmen traded lumber, fur, livestock and slaves. Some did manufacturing jobs such as mining.
  • There were also some small jobs such as printers, barbers, clockmakers, etc.

TYPE OF PEOPLE & GOVERNMENT

  • Not many people settled in NY when it first started, less than 300 people but there were Dutch settlers and European settlers.
  • New York during this time was knows as New Amsterdam was ruled by the country of Holland but was later ruled by King Charles II of England this means they had a monarchy government.

CITIES, LANDFORMS & RELIGION

  • The main cities were Albany, Brooklyn, and Rochester.
  • New York's landform had mountains, hills, and plains. Rocky but good, fertile soil and a river.
  • There was religious freedom the main religion was Protestantisum but there were some people who were Catholic, Lutherans, Puritan and others.

2 REASONS TO MOVE HERE

  • The land was good and fertile so you could farm, then trade, causing you to make more money, climate was good cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
  • The trading system was very successful you will be able to trade between the other colonies and even across the ocean, many things to trade such as iron, wheat, tobacco, and many others.

2 MORE REASONS TO MOVE HERE

  • Many jobs available and a lot of rights such as you can have any religion you want and you can vote as long as your a man.
  • New York is a royal colony meaning it's made up of many leaders not just one also there is not much labor work just mainly agriculture.

  • New York was known as the breadstick colony because it grew many crops mainly wheat.
  • The British wanted the land from the Dutch.
  • The economy thrived because of the Native Americans.
  • New York was named by James the Duke of York, hence the name.
  • It became a State on July 26, 1788.
