Not many people settled in NY when it first started, less than 300 people but there were Dutch settlers and European settlers.
New York during this time was knows as New Amsterdam was ruled by the country of Holland but was later ruled by King Charles II of England this means they had a monarchy government.
The land was good and fertile so you could farm, then trade, causing you to make more money, climate was good cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
