Biodiversity

Refers to the variety of life in an ecosystem.

What reduces biodiversity

  • Extinctions and habitat loss reduce bio-diversities.
  • Ex. The passenger pigeon has been extinct for almost 100 years.

Threatened Species

  • If a species is likely to become endangered in the near future, it's is classified as threatened species.
  • The Australian koala is threatened.

Endangered species

  • If a species is likely to become extinct in the near future it is classified as endangered.
  • The African black rhinoceros is endangered.

Habitat loss

When a habitat is destroyed.

Divided habitats

When a habitat is divided by roads, cities, or farms

Introduced species

  • Species that moves into an ecosystem as a result of human actions.
  • The Ruffe was introduced into the Great Lakes by ships from other parts of the world.

Pollution

  • Soil that is contaminated with oil, chemicals, or other pollutants can harm plants or limit plant growth.

  • Water pollution- water dwelling organisms are easily harmed by pesticides, chemicals, oil, and other pollutants.

Global warming

  • Global warming is the term used to describe a gradual increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the Earth's climate.
