Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that contact both sides of the Earths surface and a cumulonimbus cloud.

WARM MOIST AIR MIXES WITH COLD DRY AIR WHICH CAUSES THE AIRMASSES TO CAUSE AN INSTABILITY IN THE ATMOSPHERE. A CHANGE IN WIND DIRECTION AND AN INCREASE OF WIND SPEED WITH AN INCREASE OF HEIGHT CAUSE THE TORNADO TO FORM. TORNADOES USUALLY COME FROM THUNDERSTORMS.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TORNADO?

  • Hail
  • Thunderstorms
  • Mixtures of Airmasses

Scientific Process
A tornado begins in a seververe thunderstorm called a supercell. A supercell last longer than a regular thunder storm. The same property that keeps the storm going also produces many tornadoes. The wind coming into the storm starts to swirl to form a funnel. The air in the funnel spins faster and faster and creates a very low pressure area which sucks more air into it.

TYPES OF TORNADOES

  • Water Spouts (Form in Water)
  • Dust Devils (made of dust and wind)
  • Supercell Tornadoes (The strongest tornadoes)
  • Gustnado (Short and not dangerous)
  • Fire whirls (sucks fire in the tornado and carries it to other places

The Tornado in my Life
There were many tornadoes but one main tornado was the tornado of 2008. On the days of January 7-10 over 100 people died by two supercell tornadoes and hit at least 5 or more states.

Tri-State Tornado
The Tri-State tornado was one major one and killed 1,000 people and injured 3,000 people. This tornado lasted 7 hours.

Effects of a Tornado
Tornadoes destroy houses, stores, towers, and lives. Tornadoes also smash windows when added with hail.

IMPACTS ON THE ENVIROMENT

Tornadoes destroy trees and animals which disrupts the whole food chain out of whack.
