OUR PHILOSOPHY

Presentation software hasn't changed very much over the years. It's been business as usual since the invention of the Internet and the mass adoption of mobile devices. We set out to reinvent presentations for how we work, communicate, and create now.

SIMPLE

Haiku Deck encourages you to focus your message and limit the amount of text on each slide.

FUN

"Fun" is not a word most of associate with presentations, but we don't see why it can't be fun! Making the experience fun makes you feel more creatively inspired and helps you connect with your audience in a more meaningful way.

I go into more detail about the Haiku Deck philosophy and how it applies to real estate professionals here:

MY TOP 5 TIPS

I've made more Haiku Decks than just about anybody at this point, and I have found it really fun and transformative. I want to share my top "power tips" that I have figured out with you.

PLAY TO YOUR PERSONALITY

Often, when we're creating a presentation, we kind of go to the default--we grab the latest corporate template, we start blocking out headlines and bullet points, and it's a little too easy to overlook the fact that the more fun you have with it, and the more you make it "you," the better your work is going to be.

I have always loved words and storytelling, so you'll see in this deck that I'm having a little fun with that.

ONE IDEA PER SLIDE

I'm pretty much a one-scoop kind of gal, so this idea really resonates with me. Keep it simple, and keep your slide to just one key idea. Haiku Deck makes this easy.

NOT TOO MANY WORDS

(OR OYSTERS)
When it comes to words on slides, less is more. I like to think of words like oysters---about a half dozen is probably plenty. Too many more than that and you're going to end up with a stomachache.

WATCH OUT FOR THE SLIDEUMENT

(AND POISON IVY)
Falling into the "normal" way of creating slides, where you cram as much text as you can onto them so they make sense when you're not in the room, is kind of like hiking into a patch of poison ivy---all of a sudden, you're in trouble. Well, really, it's your audience that's in trouble. It might not actually cause a rash, but it's going to be pretty unpleasant.

I recommend creating a separate handout that includes additional detail and resources. Haiku Deck's Notes feature makes this very easy--you can read how to do it here:

SPEND YOUR TIME ON THE RIGHT THINGS

(THE CREATIVE PROCESS, HOMEMADE BOLOGNESE)
Before I started using Haiku Deck, I really spent way too much time on my slides--and honestly, even though I was trying, they didn't look that great. I would spend literally hours fussing with things like which font, and spacing, and having my bullets reveal one by one, and really, that was the wrong thing to spend time on.

Now I like to spend my time searching for just the right metaphor, and just the right image to illustrate it. To me it's worth the effort--and overall, it still takes less time.

(As for the homemade Bolognese? Well, that's just one more thing that I think is really worth the time.)

NOT JUST "PRESENTATIONS"

One more idea I want to leave you with is not to limit your thinking to a traditional stand-up-in-front-of-a-crowd presentation. If you think of presentations more like ideas and stories you want to share with different audiences, for different occasions, you can really get creative.

In previous sessions we've done, we've covered lots of specific ways that realtors can use Haiku Deck--here are just a few examples.
