PENTATEUCH

GENESIS

  • Genesis means "beginning"
  • 50 chapters
  • Covers the creation of the world
  • Includes God's original covenant with Abraham and Noah and the Arc

EXODUS

  • God reveals his name, personality, law, and how to worship Him
  • Hebrews are slaves of the Egyptians then are liberated by God
  • God plagued Egypt 10 times and on the last one Pharaoh decided to free Hebrews
  • Pharaoh changes his mind and pursues them (Red Sea)
  • Hebrews then travel in the desert and Moses receives the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai

EXODUS

  • Meanwhile Israelites lose faith and worship a golden calf
  • God punishes them by making them wander for 40 years
  • God gives Moses pattern for the Tabernacle
  • At the end, Israelites are left with hope of the Promised Land

LEVITICUS

  • God tells Moses the Jewish ceremonial laws
  • Very precise including how and when religious offerings should be offered to God
  • God prevents types of banned sexual behavior and ways to eat and bathe
  • God makes a covenant with Israel that will give then abundance and success
  • In return, the Israelites have to confess and repent their sins

NUMBERS

  • Israel prepares to move from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land
  • When they reach the desert, they begin to complain about everything
  • Consequence: roam desert for 40 years
  • Three men grow jealous of Moses's leadership
  • Consequence: swallowed up by God

NUMBERS

  • God spreads a plague through the people, killing thousands
  • Everyone ends up betraying God
  • At the end of the 40 years, Joshua is chosen as the leader to replace Moses

DEUTERONOMY

  • 34 chapters
  • Contains 4 books which are Moses's four sermons to the people
  • 1st: reminded people of creation and where they came from
  • 2nd: surrounded the law
  • 3rd: focused on the future of Israel and its people

DEUTERONOMY

  • 4th: Palestinian Covenant
  • Restoration was promised if they followed the law and repented
  • Deuteronomy means "second law"

PENTATEUCH

  • Features most of God's Covenants with the people
  • Genesis is the beginning of Creation and interaction with man
  • Exodus- Deuteronomy is God fulfilling the covenant of the Promise Land
  • Throughout the Israelites' time in the desert, they disobey God and suffer the consequences
  • Most of the laws we follow today are given to us in Pentateuch
