What is a detective?
A detective is a specially trained police officer who investigates crimes of all types, from homicide to larceny.
What does a detective do?
- Detectives interview suspects, witnesses, and victims as they try to piece together how a crime may have occurred.
- Work closely with local CSI to collect forensic evidence needed to work their case.
- May be called to testify in court using information meticulously collected and analyzed by the detective, CSI unit, and its lab.
Attributes of a good detective:

- Work well under pressure
- Work well with a team
Basic Educational Requirements:
- A GED or high school diploma may be all that's required for some police officer positions.
- Many agencies require a college degree in criminal justice, law enforcement or a related field.
- Continuing education in subjects like criminal law, criminology, psychology, human relations, judicial function, forensic science and criminal procedure is also encouraged .
Further Educational Requirements:
- In order to be eligible to be trained as a police officer, an individual must be at least 21 years old and a U.S. citizen.
- Police recruits must complete training academy programs and pass written and physical tests before beginning to serve as officers.
- After 3-5 years of gaining experience as a patrolman, an individual may choose to try for detective. Some states or departments may require that prospective detectives take and pass a comprehensive exam. This exam usually covers areas involving conflict management, decision-making, criminal law and procedures, forensic science, investigative techniques and state laws.
Salary:
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2008 there were 112,200 detectives and criminal investigators, and this number is set to rise to 130,900 by 2018. The average salary of a detective or criminal investigator in 2010 was $47,830, with police detectives tending to make closer to $53,990.
