PRESENTATION OUTLINE

REASONS FOR THE SEASONS

BY DANYELLE AND JAREN

MISCONCEPTIONS

  • If the seasons were causes by the earths orbit the northern hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere would have the same seasons, if winter occurred because the earth was far away from the sun everyplace on earth would be cold at the same time.
  • The earth's orbit around the sun is a highly elongated (skinny) ellipse, making the distance between earth and sun vary dramatically over the course of a year.
  • Seasons have something to do with the Earth being further from the Sun during the winter.

Student's 1 lesson:
When the earth orbits the sun its axis stays the same the whole time. When it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere it is leaning away from the sun and the Southern Hemisphere is leaning towards the sun so it's summer. When the Northern Hemisphere is in its summer phase the earth is leaning towards the sun and in the Southern Hemisphere it is leaning away from the sun so it's winter. Also in the winter the earth is a little bit closer to the sun then in the summer.

Student 2,( the awesome one😎) I learned that many people believed that the the Earths orbit is an oval and also that they thought that because the Earth is also closer to the sun it's warm and when its farther away it's colder, which is false, because in summer the sun is farthest away from earth, and I also learned that many people believed in 1981 the moon was made of cheese while the people in New Ireland believed that It was made of crackers, because they are crackers.
