Rickets is the softening of bones due to a lack of vitamin D, phosphorus, or calcium.

CAUSES

  • Breast fed infants whose mothers were not exposed to sunlight
  • A child whose diet doesn't contain vitamin D
  • A child who is not exposed to sunlight

SYMPTOMS

  • Pain in arms, pelvis, legs, and spine
  • Decreased muscle tone
  • Weakness
  • Impaired growth
  • Muscle cramps

TREATMENT

  • Vitamin D supplements
  • Corrective surgery
  • Positioning or bracing
  • Eat fish, liver, and processed milk
  • Get some sunlight
