Rohypnol is a strong CNS depressant that is commonly used to commit crimes.
It comes in pill form and can be crushed into powder, then snuck into drinks.

BACKGROUND/ORIGINS

  • First synthesized by Roche in 1972
  • First appeared in U.S. in the early 90's
  • First used in Europe in 1975

EFFECTS

  • Sedation
  • Muscle relaxation
  • Prevention of convulsions
  • Reduction in anxiety
  • Short term amnesia

STREET NAMES

  • Roofinol
  • Forget me drug
  • Roches
  • Roofies
  • Ruffles

RECREATIONAL USES

  • Often seen at parties, clubs, and raves
  • Used to incapacitate victims
  • Used in rape, theft, and suicide

MEDICAL USES

  • Preanesthetic
  • Short-term treatment for insomnia
  • Treating depression caused by use of stimulants
  • Illegal in U.S.
