THE ELEVENTH CHROMOSOME IS AFFECTED

  • Sickle cell is an inherited disease
  • Characterized by defective Hemoglobin
  • Hemoglobin-part of blood that contains iron, carries oxygen through the body, and gives blood it's red color
  • Sickle Cell usually affects African Americans

NATURE OF THE DISORDER

  • Symptoms- pain, swollen hands & feet, delayed growth, & many infections
  • Pain- something that hurts the body
  • Swollen hand & feet- get larger and sore
  • Delayed growth- you do not mature as quickly
  • Many infections- you are more open to getting infections

RESEARCH - SICK CELL ANEMIA

  • Estimated that about 90,000-100,000 people In the U.S have sickle cell
  • About 2 million people in the world have sickle cell anemia
  • About 45 years ago people would only live to around 14 now up to 40

TREATMENTS
there is no cure for sickle cell, but you can take medication to help with pain.
