Women are humans. They are not better than men, but they are not any less.

The Great Gatsby takes place in the 1920s. The 1920s was a time period of great social and economic development. Also, at this point in time, women started to get rebellious by dressing and acting in ways that would not have been acceptable in prior years.

Characters:
Daisy Buchanan- rich,shallow girl
Tom Buchanan- rich, successful man. He is Daisy's spouse.
Jordan Baker- friend of Tom and Daisy. Also a professional golfer.
Nick Carraway- Daisy's cousin. Nick is also the narrator of the story.

(Setting)
The setting of The Great Gatsby is Long Island, New York. Where the main characters of the story lived was in the East and West egg village, filled with wealthy people such as them.

In between New York and the West Egg, there was the Valley of Ashes. This location represented those of the lower class, and was also where Myrtle Wilson, the mistress Tom Buchanan had aside from his wife lived.

On one occasion in the story, Tom and Myrtle are spending time together. When Tom gets upset with Myrtle for mentioning his wife, he merely breaks her nose.

Quote: "'Daisy, Daisy, Daisy!' shouted Mrs. Wilson. 'I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy, Dai-'
Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand." (Fitzgerald 39)

In the novel, men have a significant amount of dominance over women, especially Tom Buchanan, who always wished to have control of the situation. When Tom breaks Myrtle's nose, he displays the mistreatment of women during the time, which was an even larger issue for women of the lower class.

Symbol-Necktie

A necktie symbolizes the power and dominance that men had over women in the novel. Neckties are usually worn by men with power and an important place in society.
Tom's dominance over every situation in the story shows what a powerful man he was.

(Character example)
On one occasion where Tom and Daisy were talking about Jordan Baker, Tom and Daisy's comments about Jordan displayed a huge amount of sexism.

Quotes:
Tom: "'She's a nice girl',' said Tom after a moment. 'They oughtn't let her run around the country this way.'" (Fitzgerald 23)

Daisy: "'I think the home influence will be very good for her.'" (Fitzgerald 23)

Being a professional golfer, Jordan Baker often travelled around the country. Tom and Daisy's comments on this was that her family should not be allowing her to do so, and that the home influence will be good for her. The 'home influence' shows what a small place women played in society back in the early 1920s. Daisy, being a woman herself still states that Jordan should stay home like the majority of women did at the time. The sexism that took place in this time period was displayed through this conversation.

Symbol- Black Diamond

A black diamond symbolizes being unique and different, which was what Jordan Baker was compared to the majority of the women in The Great Gatsby. Jordan's character broke many stereotypes that existed for women in the 1920s, because being a professional golfer, she often travelled and she was accustomed to being a more independent character. Jordan fulfills a more masculine role in the story which sets her apart from all the women at the time. A black diamond represents being unique because black diamonds are rare and not seen as often as white diamonds are.

Text-to-World Connection

In today's society, gender stereotypes still exist. A common stereotype is that a woman should stay home and have kids while men play the role of the financial provider in the family. Even though this is often not the case anymore, this is much like how life really was for families in The Great Gatsby.

Text-to-World Connection

In the basketball world, the playing field between men and women are not equal. The highest payed NBA player right now is Kobe Bryant, his salary over 30 million dollars. However in the WNBA, the maximum amount of money a player can make per season is $107000, and the maximum salary can only be made if a player has played in the league for six or more years.
