• Connected to Francis Marion, militia leader in South Carolina known as the "Swamp Fox"
• Ben's friend was a French officer named Major Jean Villeneuve
• Wife had died
• Protected his family by sending them to live with sister in law.

BATTLE OF YORKTOWN

• French ships come to help
• Stop British ships from leaving
• British lord and Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis.
• British surrender

The outcome

• The US gain independence
• They start to form alliances with other countries
• Ben returns to his family
• Two of his sons die

THE ARMY

• The militia was made up from farmers
• They had no training
• Major Jean Villeneuve & Ben led them
• Use gorilla warfare to attack British
• Slaves joined to gain freedom
