• In 1952 the vaccine for polio was dicovered
• It was discovered by scientist Jonas Salk
• It was then distributed all across the world
• Vaccines for diseases like this are still used today

JOE DIMAGGIO

• Joe was a baseball icon, who Played for the New York Yankees
• He set a major league record of hitting safely in 56 straight games
• Other than baseball, he was popular for other reasons aswell:
• He married Marilyn Monroe for 9 months
• He was also known as "Mr. Coffee" after his TV ads for a brand of coffee

SUGAR RAY

• Middle-weight boxing champion of the world
• At the time considered poun for pound the best boxer ever
• He was highly personable and popular

STUDEBAKER

• Popular car in 1950
• Consisted of a torpedo front and rear window
• People joked that the car looked like it was going backwards
• Company went out of business in 1966

NATO

• North atlantic treaty organization
• Established in 1949
• Composed of 12 countries at first more joined in the future
• The soviets created a rival grup known as the warsaw pact
• Mad to stop the communist exoansion

THE COLD WAR

• "War" between the U.S and the Soviets
• Started in 1947
• Capitalism vs Communism
• Cuban missle crisis occurred during the cold war
• Called a "cold war" because no shots were fired between the two countries
