Unless you just so happen to be one of those one in a billion people who were born to be famous, becoming an independent or aspiring anything is almost never an easy endeavour. Don’t believe me?

If you have just recently founded your own company or start-up biz or danced with bright eyes onto the path toward the fledgling career of your dreams, and immediately followed that move up by dropping most or all employment at that job you never really liked (but helped to pay the bills plus finance your care-free downtime), then checked your recent bank statement, you might have noticed a slight jab in your hopes of taking the world by storm – cash flow. Where did that chunk of savings you were hoarding so that you could relish this independent lifestyle go? How did that number on the screen dip so fast? Possible answer: That multi-million dollar writing, singing, rapping, directing, acting, modeling, (insert your ideal career pursuit here) contract hasn’t come through yet. Until it does (which I’m truly hoping it will for you), perhaps try out these simple budget holders:
Learn how to cook: Looking to scale back on a few pounds? Good! Cutting back on eating out at the restaurant with that dish you MUST HAVE at least once a week will add more dollars to your pocket than you might expect. Surfing for similar recipes and adding your own spicy add-on ingredients for a tasty at home dish will help to cut calories and bulk up on extra money that can be used elsewhere.
Avoid making that pit stop: Convenience stores can sometimes come with a price. Being able to snap up chips, toilet paper, a newspaper, a hoagie, and something for that sweet tooth all within five feet of entering the door may cost an additional few cents added on to the price of those items. A few cents here and there turn into significant dollars down the road. Try getting what you may need (or just may get a late night snack craving) for in the upcoming week at a reliable bargain or discount store. Buy now and save later.
Drop some hints: Want to get that new flavor of fruity lotion at B&BW? Love those shoes you just saw such and such wearing on that show? Me too! Have an upcoming birthday, anniversary, or other event with the possibility of gifts being exchanged? Maybe start mentioning that little item that has caught your eye well in advance so the possibility of a very pleasant surprise being handed over to you in a cute gift bag is increased by a hundredfold.
Become your own stylist, barber, or beautician: If you must, must, must wear the latest trendy ensemble, hairdo, or fresh cut, there are plenty of how-to videos, articles, blogs, and more to help you learn how to make yourself uber stylish on a fixed budget. Learn some new skills for a do-it-yourself fashion statement or find the most affordable places to get the look for much, much less.
Don’t scoff at the word free: Love movies? Read a novel a week? Want to try that new video game out? There are tons of places to get a sneak peek, trial offer, or absolutely no-cost access to the hobbies you love. A simple search engine query plus the word free will most likely yield a significant list of possibilities. Here’s a BIG NOTE: Only sign-up or click on sites, blogs, people, organizations, links, etc that are trustworthy and make sure the offers are legitimate (Didn’t get the hint? Avoid piracy.)
Just remember, whatever your dream…always try to have fun while pursuing it…and good luck.
