Areas with biggest acid rain problems

  • Eastern Pennsilavna and Eastern New York area

Causes for Acid rain problems in the east

  • More Population and industry in the east compared to west.
  • The West doesn't have as big a problem because it is very rural.
  • There is little industry in the western states compared to eastern states.

Gasses responsible for acid rain

  • sulfur dioxide
  • nitrogen dioxide

PRODUCTION OF GASSES

  • Sulfur dioxide is produced in burning of fossil fuels like coal
  • Nitrogen dioxide is produced by the car exhaust

fORMATION OF aCID RAIN

  • Sulfuric acid is formed from sulfur dioxide
  • Nitric acid is formed from nitrogen dioxide

aCID Rain distribution

  • By blowing compounds across state, national borders.
  • Some of the acid rain can drop into rivers and moving water.
  • While spreading in these bodies of water, the acid can release aluminum.
  • Aluminum is toxic, and can kill/harm trees, plants, and aquatic animals.
  • Also, it could poison the ground around the water, preventing tree growth.

Ocean Acidification

  • Carbon dioxide has incensed due to burning fossils fulses
  • CO2 is absorbed into the ocean
  • This uses up the calcium carbonate in the ocean.
  • Shellfish such as oysters have failed at developing due to low pH.
  • In the ocean, calcium carbonate breaks down and helps fuel the acidity.

Effects of acid rain

  • Automotive coatings- damages paint coatings
  • surface waters- transport acid rain to forest field and roads
  • forests- slows forest growth and causes trees to lose there leaves
  • materials- corrosion of metals and destroys building, bridges, statues
  • Aquatic animals such as fish can be harmed or killed.
