Set at the foothills of Zailiski Alatau Mountains, Almaty is surrounded by a large mountain range to the South, creating a “bowl” where polluted air is trapped.
This effect is quite visible from the mountains.

Over 80% of air pollution in Almaty originated from motorized transportation.
