BIODIVERSITY:
"The different forms of living things in a given environment."
Biological Diversity is the term used to describe the variety of life found on Earth and all of the natural processes.
This includes the ecosystem, genetic and cultural diversity, and the connections between these and all species.
ENDEMIC
An endemic plant or animal is restricted in a native country or area
INDIGENOUS
Originating or occurring in a particular place (Native)
EXOTIC
Originating in a foreign or distant country
Cantor's giant soft-shell turtle
EXTINCT
Species or family not having any living relatives or members existing
EXTINCT IN THE WILD
Categorized as only known by living members
kept in captivity outside its historic range
From Queensland Australia
VULNERABLE
Categorized as most likely to be endangered unless threats are improved or removed
ENDANGERED SPECIES
Species that are at risk of extinction.
CRITICALLY ENDANGERED
In an extremely serious risk of extinction
NEAR EXTINCT
A species that is dying out and will no longer exist.
CONSERVATION-DEPENDENT SPECIES
Categorized as dependent on conservation efforts to prevent it from being threatened with extinction.
LEAST CONCERN SPECIES
Categorized as evaluated but not qualified for any other category.
COMMON THREATS
TO BIODIVERSITY
HABITAT LOSS:
When the area is converted from usable to non-usable habitat (made industrial)
INVASIVE SPECIES:
When an animal or plant moves into a new area and affect its resident species.
POLLUTION:
Caused by the discharge of toxic chemicals and heavy metals into the environment affecting abundance.
BIOACCUMULATION:
The process of chemicals becoming increasingly concentrated in animal or plant tissues as they move up the food chain.
HUMAN POPULATION:
Caused by the increase of human population having an impact on the excessive use of resources.
OVERHARVESTING:
Targeted hunting, fishing and gathering of a particular species may greatly decrease species.
CLIMATE CHANGE:
Because of the drastic change of temperature, species find it impossible and difficult to survive in the environments they are used to.
