BULLYING AND CYBER BULLYING

WHAT IS BULLYING?

  • Unwanted, aggressive behavior usually among school aged children
  • Involves real or perceived power imbalance
  • Making threats and physically attacking someone
  • Spreading rumors
  • Excluding someone

VERBAL BULLYING

  • Namecalling/insults
  • Verbal abuse
  • Teasing
  • Spreading rumors
  • Homophobic or racist remarks

PHYSICAL BULLYING

  • Negative physical contact between bully and victim
  • Hitting
  • Kicking
  • Pinching
  • Pushing

CYBER BULLYING

  • Main type of bullying as of 2014
  • Can happen at anytime and can happen to any kid
  • Happens over electronic devices, cellphone, social media etc
  • Includes abusive or hurtful texts, emails or posts, images or videos
  • Very hard to escape the harassment

SHORT TERM EFFECTS OF BULLYING

  • Anxiety
  • Fear or dread of going to school
  • Decrease in self esteem
  • Physical symptoms such as bruises or headaches
  • Performance dip in school

LONG TERM EFFECTS OF BULLYING

  • Self inflicted harm
  • Psychological disorders
  • More likely to try drugs
  • Continuous and severe depression
  • Likely to require psychological help

STATISTICS OF BULLYING

  • Bullying results in 4,400 deaths per year
  • Over 14% of students have considered suicide
  • Almost 7% of students have attempted suicide
  • 160,000 kids stay home because of bullying

HOW TO PREVENT BULLYING

  • Tell an adult if you see bullying
  • Assess bullying in your school
  • Engage parents and youth
  • Create policies and rules
  • Build a safe environment

HOW TO NOT BE A BYSTANDER

  • Stand up to the bully
  • Don't watch it happen, try to stop it
  • Don't encourge the bully
  • Defend the person being bullied

WHERE AND WHO TO GET HELP FROM

  • You can get help from teachers
  • Parents
  • Older siblings
  • Coaches
  • Other relatives
