WHO WAS MAGELLAN?

  • Magellan was born in 1480 in Portugal
  • Studied music, dance, fighting and hunting
  • Wanted to explore at a young age
  • Magellan was a sailer and wanted to be like Christopher columbus
  • Magellan's mom was an astronomer
  • Magellan explored because he grew up in the age of exploration
  • Was killed by a stick with poison on it on April 27, 1521

WHAT DID MAGELLAN DO?

  • Magellan visited many places in India, Africa and Asia
  • The spainish word Pacifico means calm and Magellan named the ocean 'pacific' because the water looked so calm
  • He also fought in many battles
  • King of Spain gave him money and support to go exploring the spice islands of the far east
  • Magellan led five ships along the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean
  • Led fist expedition that sailed around the world
  • Found a shortcut waterway from the east to the west coast of South America

  • He explored on the ocean
  • He explored in south america
  • He explored all over the world looking for the spice islands of the far east

WHEN DID MAGELLAN DO IT?

  • Magellan began exploring in 1519
  • In 1520 found a waterway near the tip of South America

WHY DID MAGELLAN EXPLORE?

  • King of Spain gave money to him
  • Interested in finding the spice islands and new lands
  • Money also gave him the opportunity to get ships
  • He hoped to claim new lands for Portugal
  • He wanted to be like Christopher Columbus and Vasco da Gama

WHAT TOOLS DID MAGELLAN USE?

  • Needed food and water to survive
  • Ships called San Antonio, Trinidad and Victoria
  • Magellan sailed around the world
  • Magellan had 277 men on each ship
  • When they ran out of food they ate rats, animal skins and saw dust

HOW DID THE WORLD CHANGE BECAUSE OF MAGELLANS EXPLORETOIN?

  • Because of his exploration understanding of the world
  • Because of his exploration we have an understanding of the world
  • He showed that the world was mostly made of water
  • Because of Magellan now we have a shortcut waterway from the east to the west coast of South America
  • It is called The Strait of Magellan
