  • He was a lawyer, politician and revolutionary.
  • He was the most popular speaker and agitators of the revolution of 1848.
  • After he moved to the United States
  • He became brigade commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

MOVING TO THE U.S.

  • After moving to the United States, Hecker was still involved in Germany.
  • He returned to participate.
  • In the spring of 1849, the Baden revolution re-ignited
  • He was defeated then returned to Illinois.

  • He was born October 11, 1805
  • He died August 21, 1870
  • His family was quite poor and didn't have much nobility
  • He went to a school in Munich where he studied law
  • He studied law at the university of Göttingen and Heidelberg.

THE REVOLUTION

  • He met Friedrich Hecker in Mannheim
  • Struve took on a leading role in the revolutions in Baden
  • The revolution broke out, Struve published a demand for a federal republic

DREAMS

  • Wanted to spread his idea for a federal Germany across the country
  • He started in Southwest Germany, accompanied by Hecker
  • They organized a meeting of a revolutionary assembly
  • This assembly was held in Konstanz
  • It was held on April 14, 1848
