Federalism

Sovereignty is constitutional divided by units
Federalism is when the government is divided into different units that have separate roles within it. In the United States, This is about the relationship between the state and central government. Both are held to standard of the constitution and are regulated by the Bill of Rights.

Checks and Balances

Branches will limit each other's power
Checks and balances are three branches made to make sure no one group would have all the power. There are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, and their individuals powers will make sure that one individual branch does not seize power.

Separation of powers

The government is not a monopoly
The government is divided into three different branches, the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The founding fathers of this country set it up this way so the power is not concentrated into one place. It is distributed, which is safer for a democracy to flourish.

Popular sovereignty

Government gets power from the people
Popular sovereignty, votes by the people for the government could instruct the laws.

Limited government

The government is not a tyranny
The government should not have total power. It should be limited by the people so it cannot be tyrannical. Limiting the power of the government gives the people more power, and that is essentially what a democracy is.

Supreme court

The supreme court can review laws
The supreme court is on top and it is brought in to make the big decisions when needed.
