THE CONTROVERSIAL HAWAIIAN SUNSCREEN BAN
On Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018, the governor of Hawaii signed the first bill in the country that would ban certain chemicals in sunscreen that are harmful to coral reefs.
The bill will go into effect on January 1st, 2021. From then on, the sale and distribution of sunscreen with the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate will be illegal.
A study by Haereticus Enviromental Laboratory found the chemicals cause bleaching, deformities and DNA damage to coral when they're washed off or deposited into bodies of water
However, some people, including many dermatologists, oppose the ban saying that the ban will limit the choice of sunscreen, which in turn, will make more people prone to skin cancer
The ban would also force major sunscreen companies to either change their products or lose sales in Hawaii, where a large portion of their sales originate, many companies have spoken out against the ban
The Hawaiian sunscreen ban is a positive modification because we are doing something to change the environment in a positive way
