FEUDALISM

WHAT IS FUEDALISM

  • Feudalism stated because Kings were unable to defend their nobles
  • The armies were too slow
  • Nobles felt that the kings couldn't protect them so the nobles decided to get someone to protect them
  • Nobles hired knights to go to war with the hem and help protect each other
  • As a result nobles grew in power and the kings power shrunk

FEUDALISM IN EGLAND

  • Feudalism was brought to Britain in 1000
  • A French Noble[William Duke of Normandy] brought feudalism to Britain
  • Nobles[Lords] paid their knights[vassals] by land the land the vassals earned is called a fief

DUTIES OF A LORD

  • Lords have to send help to their vassals when an enemy is coming
  • Lords must be fair to their vassals
  • If a lord is going to punish their vassal the lord must have a reason
  • If a lord fails to do his duties a vassal could break the relationship

DUTIES OF A VASSAL

  • Vassals have to fight with their Lords at battles
  • Vassals have to give their Lords money on special occasions
  • If a Lord visits his Vassal, the vassal must provide food and shelter to his Lord
  • A knight can be a vassal to two different lords if they wanted to

MANOR SYSTEM

  • Vassals hire farmers to come and farm on the vassals land but the farmer must give a portion of the profit to the vassal
  • Vassals could also have surfs come live in there fiefs to help the farmers but the surfs have to live on the land and can't leave

FEUDALISM IN JAPAN

  • In Japan had samurais that fought with the country
  • The Emperor was the head of the feudal system in Japan
  • The Emperor had a lord to go and find a samurai to protect and fight with the emperor and lord
  • The samurais earned rice and grain for their loyalty

CODE OF CHIVALRY

  • The code of chivalry was in Europe and the knights had to follow
  • Knights lived to serve the king
  • Knights avoided lying to anyone
  • Knight obeyed the laws of the king, country, and chivalry
  • Knights never abandon a friend, ally, noble cause

BUSHIDO

  • Bushido was part of Feudalism in Japan
  • Part of Bushido is Sepuko
  • Sepuko is an act samurais do when they loose a fight and want to redeem themselves
  • Sepuko is suicide
