JOHN 15: 5-8

  • "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in
  • him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.
  • anyone who does not remain in me and I in him will be thrown out like a
  • branch and wither; people will gather and throw them into a fire and
  • and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in

JOHN 15: 5-8

  • you, ask for whatever you wish and it will be done for you. By
  • this my Father is glorified that you bear much fruit anf become my
  • disciples." --John 15: 5-8

Context

  • This is an example of a parable in the Gospel of John.
  • Jesus is talking to his disciples as they leave from the Last supper
  • At the last supper, Jesus say that he will soon be leaving.
  • He promises that although he will be leaving, he will send the
  • holy Spirit as an advocate . He challenges them to stay faithful.

MEANING

  • Jesus is telling his disciples that we can only be happy
  • by following Him. If we remain faithful to God and live
  • like jesus did, we will be able to do anything. It may
  • not always be easy, but we will have eternal life if we
  • follow Jesus' teachings.

MEANING

  • Jesus is using a parable, or an analogy, of a
  • branch and a vine. Jesus says that he is the vine
  • and that we are the branches. If a branch and a vine
  • stay connected, they will produce fruit. Jesus is saying
  • that we will gain the fruits of eternal life if we follow him.

Dear God,
Give us courage to remain faithful to you when it may be difficult. Help us to understand that you are the only way to eternal life. Grant us the gift of everlasting life to us so that we can enjoy your eternal happiness. Remind us that even when it may not seem like it that you are watching over us and guiding us. Show us your love and kindness.
Amen.
