  • Double edged scalpel
  • Used for surgery
  • They would cut open veins and drain "Bad blood"
  • Used in surgery today

"RUSH'S THUNDERCLAPPER" PILLS

  • Dr. Rush said they could cure many illnesses
  • Ingredients: Calomel- 6 parts mercury to 1 part chlorine and Jalap (jalapeno)
  • "Each was a purgative of explosive powder"
  • If one didn't work, they could take 2 or 3
  • Basically early laxatives

Tourniquets

  • Constricting device to control bleeding
  • Can cause severe tissue damage
  • Used when limbs may have to be amputated

Flannel Shirts

  • Took 45 on the journey
  • Their initial uniforms wore out
  • Made clothes from animal skins
  • Traded animal skins for flannel

  • A thick paste made by boiling down beef, eggs, and vegetables
  • Brought 193 pounds
  • Cost $289.50
  • Only eaten as a last resort
  • 33 adults ate about 1 pound a day

HADLEY'S QUADRANT

  • Used for making celestial observations
  • They used it to find the altitude between the sun and the horizon and therefore determine latitude
  • Another name for an "octant"
  • Only took one on the trip

  • Calculated longitude and time
  • Usually a wristwatch
  • Most expensive item taken ($250)
  • Still bought today ($500-25,000)
  • Helped with the cartography

Kentucky Rifles

  • Used in War of 1812, Mexican-American War, and Civil War
  • 9 pounds, 33 inches long
  • Prototypes were taken, used for hunting
  • None exist today
  • Cost $864.50 - 1,196.27

LONG BARRELED RIFLES

  • Fired bullets with compressed air
  • Imported from Australia
  • 10 pounds, 4 feet long
  • One of the most high tech weapons, 50 years ahead of its time
  • Had as much power as a modern pistol

MOSQUITO CURTAINS

  • Nets placed over tents to keep out bugs
  • Didn't know they carried Malaria
  • Only found mosquitos annoying
  • Widely used today

VERMILION FACE PAINT

  • Lewis painted the faces of Shoshone people with this during the expedition as a sign of peace
  • It is a bright red paint made by grinding minerals into pigment
