LIVING FOSSILS

  • He keeps as still as a stone
  • He is shedding his skin
  • He sees something coming he moves quickly and quietly and snap the bug is dead
  • He goes back to his log

THE LAST SURVIVORS

  • Tuatara belong to a ancient group called the sphenodontia
  • 100years ago the tuatara looked like there ancestors and They've hardly changed
  • Some people describe tuatara as a living fossils
  • They live on islands to hide from predators and they share burrow

PRECIOUS EGGS

  • bugsy the tuatara has a mate called honey
  • Honey had eggs.
  • She got x-rayed and she had several eggs
  • Honey dug a burrow

WAITING FOR EGGS TO HATCH

  • The keepers at rainbow springs looked after the eggs
  • To make sure they hatch
  • They put special lamps to keep them warm
  • It took 184 days to hatch (about six months)

CARING FOR BABY TUATARA

  • The baby tuatara were only a few centimetres
  • The keepers kept the baby's warm
  • There presents would of eaten them
  • Like all reptiles including snakes,geckos and tuatara are cold-blooded

ON SHOW

  • When there six moths old they moved outside
  • They moved in a special enclosure
  • Henry is over 100 years old
  • Tuataras can 800 grams
