Fame and fortune

  • best known for the internationally best-selling series called “Harry Potter."
  • so successful, became the thirteenth wealthiest woman in Britain—wealthier than even the queen.

It all started at King's cross

  • came up with the idea for the book series following the adventures of a scrawny young wizard who went by the name of Harry Potter while on a train at King's Cross Station in 1990.

The death of Harry's parents was heavily influenced by the death of my own mother, who died of multiple sclerosis at age 45.

  • last of Harry Potter books (“Harry Potter & the Deathly Hollows") released in 2007 = largest ever pre-ordered book on amazon.com and Barnes & Noble and Borders
  • each of Harry Potter books were adapted into movies that became box-office successes

Denouncements for Religious reasons

  • As Harry Potter grew more famous, fundamentalists from the U.S. to Russia to the Muslim world denounced the series
  • The Pope even once said that the series' "subtle seductions" would "distort Christianity in the soul."

Impact

  • 300 wizard rock bands
  • inspired online groups such as the Harry Potter Alliance, whose motto is, "The weapon we have is love."
  • "What would Harry do?" campaign to raise awareness of genocide in Darfur that went from Australia to South America to the U.S. etc
  • (genocide-the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.)
