HISTORY

  • First visit to Delaware: Dutch Sailor Henry Hudson - 1609
  • First settlement: New Sweden (1638)
  • The settlement was taken over by the Dutch after the Swedish had control
  • Shortly after, English take control of the settlement
  • Delaware first became a state on 12/7/1787

GEOGRAPHY

  • Size of area: Approximately 2.044 mi
  • Flat Lowland
  • Fertile soil for farming
  • Region; Atlantic Coastal
  • H/E intersection: Farming, cutting down trees

ECONOMICS

  • The economy of colonial Delaware was based on trade
  • Major crops: grain, flax, vegetables, fruit
  • Hydro-power was used in grain mills
  • Timber and Fishing was also a big part of it as well

  • Early Constitutions adopted in 1776, 1792, 1831
  • 1676; NY governor gives Delaware a set of rules
  • Colonial Delaware was governed by a Proprietary Colony
